(b) Former kings — Privy Purse was a special privilege given to former kings. At the time of independence, more than 555 small or large princely States existed in India. The Privy Purse was a specific amount of money that was to be paid annually by the Indian government to the rulers of princely states and their successors who had acceded to India. The privy purses were guaranteed to these rulers under Article 291 of the Indian Constitution. These payments were tax-free and were to be paid from 26th the Consolidated Fund of India. The Constitutional Amendment abolished it.
